The Kaimai Mamaku Restoration Project is at the heart of a growing movement to restore native ecosystems in Aotearoa. Since inception, kaitiaki have removed more than 33,700 predators through trapping alone, planted more than 81,000 rākau and are actively controlling more than 7,500 hectares within the Kaimai Mamaku.

But what these stats don’t show are the countless days outside in the rain, hail and shine, the kilometers of untouched terrain hiked, the kilograms of traps carried into remote corners of the ngahere, the hours of training completed and the countless meetings and conversations to advance the kaupapa.

All of that to say… this mahi is not easy.

To everyone who joins us on this journey—thank you for your ongoing commitment and advocacy for our vision of restoring the mauri of the Kaimai Mamaku.

In this special Conservation Week newsletter, we‘re celebrating the hard mahi of our iwi and hapū-led projects that are blending mātauranga with western science methods to build resilience in this special place.

So, grab a kaputī and learn about the incredible achievements of the Kaimai Mamaku Restoration Project.
